Time to look forward to the coming month (March 2012)…
…and review the events, anniversaries and holidays that we can take advantage of to build a marketing campaign, product launch or promotion around.
Let’s start with strictly Australian events…
…and there are a few this month.
Mar 1- First day of autumn (already!)
Mar 3 – Mardi Gras parade (Sydney)
The Mardi Gras festival runs from Feb 12- Mar 4, but the centrepiece parade is on March 3.

Mar 12 – Commonwealth Day, Labour Day (VIC), Canberra Day (ACT), Adelaide Cup (SA), Eight Hours Day (TAS)
Mar 20 – Autumn Equinox
The Australian Grand Prix takes place over 15-18 March in Melbourne.
Of course, St. Patrick’s Day is enthusiastically celebrated Australia-wide!
Turning our attention to the wider world…
Mar 1 – St David’s Day (patron saint of Wales)
Mar 3 – Anniversary of the birth of Alexander Graham Bell
Mar 8 – International Women’s Day
Mar 10 – Money Day! (anniversary of the first printing of paper money in USA in 1862)

More anniversaries and holidays to be found at www.BlueMountain.com.
Finally for this month…
…on 9 March 1776, London printers William Strahan and Thomas Cadell released “An Inquiry Into The Nature And Causes Of The Wealth Of Nations” by Adam Smith. It sold out within two months but was not reprinted until 1778. Often quoted (if read less often) it’s one of the most influential economics books ever published…
…and arguably one of the most influential books of any type published.
So go ahead and pursue your rational self-interest vigorously with innovative, event-driven promotions in the coming month!
UPDATE (20 February 2012):
In Australia, I overlooked the 20th Melbourne Food And Wine Festival that runs from 2-21 March.
UPDATE 2 (19 March 2012):
Can’t believe I missed this one…
…the 80th anniversary of the opening of the Sydney Harbour Bridge on 19 March 1932.
Make a note for future years!
Google have a “doodle” to mark the occasion but in the local press there hasn’t been too much made of the event.
However, the Bridge is an iconic landmark and a great engineering achievement. Worth noting for future years.
