Let’s take a look at the coming month at events. occasions, holidays and anniversaries that can form the basis for a marketing calendar in July 2012.
The big event of the month is the 2012 Summer Olympic Games that start on July 27 and run through until August 12. You’ve most likely already seen Olympic themed promotions from major sponsors like McDonald’s and local sponsors in your own country.
More on that later but first let’s take a look at events in Australia.
First, a REMINDER that June 30 is the end of the financial year in Australia. So plenty of scope for “tax saving” and other financially themed promotions.
Next, the same universal ideas that are listed below apply equally in Australia. The main one being that we’re now half-way through the year, time to take stock and focus on making the most of the rest of 2012.
And the focus will need to be on those kind of ideas because in Australia July is a month where calendar based events are thin on the ground.
There are no official holidays.
“Christmas in July” events have appeared in recent years and businesses with a USAconnection might be able to use an “Independence Day – Fourth Of July” theme.
Outside of that, Winter and New Financial Year themes are the best choices.
There may be some local events you can make use of. In Sydney, for example, the 18th Biennale runs throughout July (dates are 27 June to 16 September). The Biennale is a contemporary arts festival.

Finally, for this month…
On 23 July 1962, the Telstar satellite beamed the first live public television pictures across the Atlantic. Walter Cronkite was at the New York end and Richard Dimbleby in Brussels. An instrumental single inspired by this, “Telstar”, reached #1 in the UK on October 4 and went on to become the first #1 in America by a British group (The Tornadoes) on December 22.
