Welcome to this month’s “Looking Ahead” feature. Here we’ll review events, occasions, holidays and anniversaries that you can use in an event-driven marketing promotion or campaign in August 2013.
It’s a pretty barren month for major holidays. In the northern hemisphere it’s the dog days of summer. In the south it’s the tail-end of winter. You can always use these “seasonal” themes if all else fails.
August is also a “Back To School” month for many northern hemisphere countries…
…and remember major sporting events such as the US PGA Championship, the US Open Tennis and the start of the football season in the UK.
Other events…
August 4 – Friendship Day
August 5 – International Beer Day
August 8 – Infinity Day
August 9 – Book Lover’s Day
August 10 – St Lawrence’s Day (patron saint of brewers)
August 12 – International Youth Day
August 13 – International Left Hander’s Day
August 17 – Davy Crockett Day (anniversary of the birth of the American frontier legend in 1786)

Looking at my previous home in Australia…
…frankly it’s a pretty bare month.
There’s a Bank Holiday in NSW (August 5)…
…and the Royal Queensland Show in Brisbane (August 14).
(Show dates vary across Queensland, so check the details for your local area.)
We’re coming to the end of winter in Australia so if you’re planning a spring-related promotion this is a good time to prepare.
To end this month…
…on August 2, 1930 Wonder Bread was introduced by the Continental Baking Company. The world’s first sliced bread, Wonder became the largest selling brand of bread.
August 3, 1933 the first Mickey Mouse watch goes on sale for $2.75. This was one of the earliest pieces of merchandise tied to a movie and one of the best known.
On 5 August 1888, Bertha Benz (wife of the German inventor Karl Benz) became the first person to drive a car over a long distance. She drove a Benz Patent-Motorwagen from Mannheim to Pforzheim. She made the return trip 3 days later for a total or 121 miles.
On August 15, 1914 the Panama Canal opened.
For advertising and marketing geeks…
…on August 5, 1886 Bruce Barton was born in Robbins, Tennessee. Cofounder of agency BBDO, Barton was on of the greats of the industry and author of a number of influential books.
That’s it for this month. Every success with your event-driven marketing in August 2013.
UPDATE (14 July 2013):
