American author John Updike died recently.
There’s an article about his life and work in “The Economist” (“John Updike – An American Subversive”)…
…and this caught my eye…
“John Updike…published 28 novels, 14 collections of short stories, nine volumes of poetry and half a century’s worth of reviews on, among other things, photography, painting, golf and cartoons”
In other words, he was a prolific writer…
…and this about how he worked…
“…Mr Updike toiled at his typewriter, writing three publishable pages a day, a book a year, working in an office each morning from 9am until lunch…”
Now, regardless of what you think about Updike’s writing, clearly he was successful at what he did.
And, clearly, he was serious about what he did.
Success leaves clues, as the saying goes.
So, if you want to be successful as a copywriter, be serious about your craft and your business.
And part of that is to write something everyday, at least on “working” days.
Personally, I think it’s a good idea to schedule weekends “off” but, hey, I know as a freelancer sometimes you’ve just got to get the work done.
