Looking Ahead – Marketing Calendar February 2017

Let’s take a look at the coming month of February 2017 for the various holidays, events and anniversaries that smart marketers can use as the basis for a promotion or campaign and to create a marketing calendar for February 2017.

Valentine’s Day (February 14) is the standout occasion for the month pretty much everywhere. Remember also “Groundhog Day” (February 2), now part of the popular consciousness thanks to the classic Bill Murray movie.

February also sees the 89th Academy Awards…better known as “The Oscars”. The occasion provides the opportunity for linking with the awards themselves, as well as having your own “Oscars” for your market. This year the awards ceremony is held on February 26.

2016…A Selection Of Worthwhile Marketing and Business Books…

Looking back over the past 12 months, here is a selection of books that practitioners of direct response marketing and advertising will find of interest and value.

In the “No B.S.” range from Dan Kennedy came this offering…

No B.S. Guide to Maximum Referrals and Customer Retention: The Ultimate No Holds Barred Plan to Securing New Customers and Maximum Profits

The two big themes of the book are that every business really should have an active customer retention strategy and that referrals come from that active implementation of an ongoing relationship management system.

I’m a big fan of all the “No B.S.” books and this is no exception. It deals with a neglected area of business success in a straightforward way and with plenty of actionable ideas. It’s a relatively short book (under 200 pages) and in some areas it’s more a primer than an in-depth treatment of the material.

These are minor criticisms. I’d regard this as one of the essential core books in the series and it deserves a place in the library of any serious marketer (and business owner).

Looking Ahead – Marketing Calendar January 2017

2016 is not yet over…we still have Christmas and the New Year to enjoy…

…but it’s not too soon to get started on putting together a marketing calendar January 2017. So let’s take a look ahead at some of the events, anniversaries and other occasions that we can put to use for an event-driven marketing event or promotion.

Of course, the New Year itself is a great reason for a promotion. At this time, most people are making plans for the year ahead and often looking to make a “fresh start”.

“New Year Sales” are a staple pretty much around the world and no reason why you can’t make use of this.

January is also “Brainteaser”, “Get Organized” and “Creativity” month.

Also…

…in 2017 Chinese New Year falls in January on the 28th, when the “Year Of The Rooster” starts.

And…this month sees a “Friday the 13th”!

Marketing Thoughts About Marks & Spencer Restructuring

UK retail giant Marks & Spencer (“M&S”) recently announced its latest plan to reverse a long decline in financial performance…

“M&S has confirmed it will close 30 UK stores and retreat from 10 countries as it embarks on a sweeping restructuring plan that will promote its successful food business ahead of its struggling clothing arm.

The high-street retailer also recorded a huge drop in statutory profits for the first half of the year, after making changes to staff pay and closing its defined benefit pension scheme.

Under new boss Steve Rowe, who took up the top job in April, M&S will launch a five-year plan to refresh around 100 UK stores, or 25pc of its estate. Thirty stores will close, while M&S plans to open 200 smaller Simply Food stores by the end of the decade. The scheme will cost around £50m a year over the first three years, rising to £100m for the last two years.

In addition, M&S will close 53 loss-making international stores and exit 10 markets, as it switches its overseas business to a franchise model. This will result in a charge of £150-200m in the next 12 months, it said, and will see the closure of its flagship stores in Paris. M&S already has 267 franchised stores globally.”

Since its heyday in the 1990’s, M&S has endured a long slide from financial grace.  To be fair, it’s not alone among retailers in struggling to deal with the current (extended) recession and the disruption caused by the Internet revolution.  From the November 2016 “No B.S. Marketing Letter”…

“RETAIL REELING. Macy’s is closing 100 stores by early 2017.  Sports Authority, bankrupt, closing 450 stores.  Wal-Mart closing 269 stores, slamming brakes on new stores in the U.S. and diverting a billion dollars or so into admittedly trying to play catch up to Amazon in ecommerce.”

In the UK, sort-of M&S competitor British Home Stores closed its doors earlier this year, the latest in a string of High Street casualties.
