Looking Ahead – Marketing Calendar April 2018

Here’s our regular look ahead at the coming month, April 2018…

…and the events, holidays and anniversaries that a smart marketer can use as the foundation for an event-driven campaign or marketing promotion.

This year Easter straddles March and April…

…with Easter Sunday falling on April 1.

The other prominent event of general interest this month is…

…”April Fool’s Day” (a day for practical jokes and spreading hoaxes) on the first of the month.

It’s also “Shakespeare Day” on April 23 which is also “English Language Day” and “World Book and Copyright Day”.

Looking Ahead – Marketing Calendar March 2108

Time to look ahead at the month of March 2018 at the events anniversaries and holidays that we can use to build a marketing calendar for campaigns, product launches or promotions.

The main occasion of general interest is St Patrick’s Day on March 17. Plenty of scope for ideas based around luck, good fortune and finding that elusive “pot of gold” at the end of the rainbow.

There is also the change of season with the March Equinox (March 20 at 16.15 UT). Daylight Savings Time changes this month as well in many countries.

Also, Easter starts at the end of the month with Good Friday falling on March 30.

Also, this year the Oscars are a little later than usual. The 90th Academy Awards will be held on Sunday 4 March

Loooking Ahead – Marketing Calendar February 2018

Let’s take a look at the coming month of February 2018 for the various holidays, events and anniversaries that smart marketers can use as the basis for a promotion or campaign and to create a marketing calendar for February 2018.

Valentine’s Day (February 14) is the standout occasion for the month pretty much everywhere. Remember also “Groundhog Day” (February 2), now part of the popular consciousness thanks to the classic Bill Murray movie.

It’s also Chinese New Year, that starts on Friday, February 16 to bring in the Year of the Dog. Chinese New Year is actually celebrated for 15 consecutive days, but the first three days are most important. The 15th and final day, Chap Goh Mei is also a big event, where houses are decorated with an abundance of brightly coloured lights. It is a way of ending with a grand finale rather than the festivities just fading away gradually.

Marketing Stories – Goodbye 2017. Hello 2018.

Many direct response marketers and copywriters make use of stories in both sales copy and marketing in general. The advantages are many…

It helps cut through the marketing clutter
You can create a stronger emotional connection with your market
It helps create the conditions for a successful sale

Also…it makes the copy and marketing a lot more interesting!

Stories can be used both tactically and strategically. In the latter case, we often talk about a back story or an “origin story” – that is to say how did the business come about and why was the business started? Put another way, what is the business about, over and above the simple delivery of a product or service?

One of my favourite restaurants (now a chain) in the UK is Dishoom. Regularly appearing in lists of favourite or top restaurants, the small London-based chain has expanded steadily in recent years. I don’t have financial data but I have to assume they are pretty successful. Certainly, every time I have been into one of the restaurants they are very busy.

Looking Ahead – Marketing Calendar January 2018

2017 is not yet over…we still have Christmas and the New Year to enjoy…

…but it’s not too soon to get started on putting together a marketing calendar for January 2018. So let’s take a look ahead at some of the events, anniversaries and other occasions that we can put to use for an event-driven marketing event or promotion.

Of course, the New Year itself is a great reason for a promotion. At this time, most people are making plans for the year ahead and often looking to make a “fresh start”.

“New Year Sales” are a staple pretty much around the world and no reason why you can’t make use of this.

January is also “Brainteaser”, “Get Organized” and “Creativity” month.

Also…looking a little further ahead…

…in 2018 Chinese New Year falls in February on the 16th.
