I’ve been a Direct Response Marketer and Copywriter since May 2004. Up until that time I had worked in the banking industry for almost 20 years. In early 2004 I was “retrenched” / “made redundant” / “laid off” (the term seems to vary in different countries!) as part of a cost cutting exercise.
Now, I’d been looking to make a change and an acquaintance was looking for someone to work with him and take over the marketing of his business. That fitted in with the new direction I wanted to take so I went to work with him.
This change wasn’t actually as radical as you might think because during my banking career I had spent a large amount of time on the business development side of the business. That means I have a lot of experience in B2B as well as knowing an enormous amount about financial markets and products.
Back to 2004. I very quickly figured out that copywriting was going to be essential to the success of the business and by default I was the copywriter!
Although in my banking career I had written many, many proposals it was obvious that Direct Response Copywriting (and Marketing) was a different ball game. So, I sought out suitable mentors and training.
I came across David Garfinkel through a teleseminar hosted by Craig Perrine, I recall. I immediately liked David’s style and what he had to say made a lot of sense. I invested in his “Copywriting Templates” course and when he announced the “Breakthrough Copywriting” workshop I jumped at the chance to attend.
Wow! I’m glad I did. Hands down one of the best events I have ever attended (and I’ve been to a few, including the whole of Tony Robbins’ “Mastery University” series). I had the opportunity to meet (yes, really meet and talk with) not just David Garfinkel but Michel Fortin, Peter Stone, Carl Galletti, Brian Keith Voiles, Craig Perrine and a host of others.
It really was a “breakthrough” event for me and the results in the business quickly took off. Over a 2 year period, by applying proven principles of Direct Response Marketing we increased sales by 223% and subscriber numbers by 86% (without spending much on advertising, by the way).
In mid 2007 I decided that it was time to launch out on my own and on July 1 that year “Maximum Results Copywriting” opened for business.
Since then I’ve been working with a range of clients (with projects ranging from a DVD training program for the “MYOB” software to hypnosis courses).
